DIY Straw Bag: Under $20
The straw bag trend is intense. It is taking over Instagram feeds, Pinterest feeds, and just about every social media platform. I can't say I'm surprised at their popularity because, let's be real, they are freakin' adorable.
Unfortunately, what's not so adorable, is their price tags. I've personally never been someone to splurge on anything, especially an accessory. So I got to brainstorming how I could DIY the trend, since this is what I always end up doing after deliberating buying an expensive item. My inspiration struck at my dinner table. I noticed one of our dinner dishes sitting on a little round woven placemat and I realized it would be perfect for the bag!
Ultimately, the bag only costed me $15! Which definitely beats the usual $40-$50 range! So keep on reading if you want to know how to make your own!
Step 1: Gather Supplies
-piece of straw-like material*
-rope/extra material for strap
-hot glue gun/E6000
-scissors
*you could also use a different fabric that you like to add some personality! Just make sure it's thick!
For my fabric, I used a bag that I got at the thrift store for $2 but you can easily find a similar material at the fabric store for super cheap because you won't need for than a square foot of material.
Step 2: Measure and Cut
Measure
1) Put your fabric around the coaster and mark where you want to cut it.
Also make sure the width of your fabric is large enough because this determines how big the inside of your bag is. Leave an inch on each end for hemming!
2) After cutting your fabric strip, hem each end with hot glue.
tip: If you're having trouble gluing, lightly sand down the parts of the coaster you're trying to glue on, this will help it adhere better. Also make sure you're holding down the pieces that you're glueing until the glue completely dries!
Step 3: Assemble
1) Fold down 1/2 an inch of your material and begin gluing that around the circumference of the coaster.
tip: If you're having issues making the fabric curve, cut tiny slits periodically to help it curve. (shown in image above)
2) Repeat step 1 with the other coaster and you should have something like the image below!
Step 4: Add the Strap
You could use a rope for this or a long piece of fabric!
1) Simply measure out how much rope or fabric you need by draping it over your shoulder and estimating where you want your bag to land on your body. Leave a couple inches to attach!
2) Using glue or sewing, attach the straps to the insides of the bag!
Step 5: Flaunt Your New Bag!
Now you have a super cute and trendy bag that makes you and your wallet happy! One of the coolest parts is, when someone asks where you got it or compliments it, you can proudly say that you made it! Happy styling loves!
